Last spring, I was deeply involved in the University of Notre Dame Poverty Initiative through
the Pulte Institute. My role introduced me to various faculty, students, and staff, and enabled
me to learn from their experiences. My participation helped me understand the richness of the
i-Lab curriculum, the diversity of partner organizations worldwide, and the meaningful projects
conducted on campus and in fieldwork.
The Pulte Institute collaborates closely with a diverse array of students from the University of Notre Dame,
engaging them in research, internships, and other impactful roles aimed at driving change and professional
development. Following are reflections from students on how time spent working with the Pulte Institute has
supported their growth in the classroom and beyond:

I have had the opportunity and privilege to work with the Pulte Institute as a student intern for
the 2024 Mandela Washington Fellowship, an example of policy and governmental support that
translates to quantifiable personal and professional development. This experience has been
invaluable to me both as a professional approaching a career, as well as on a personal level as a
Catholic and citizen of an ever-interdependent, globalizing world.

Working at Pulte has complemented my education by adding a practice-oriented viewpoint.
This experience has provided tangible skills useful in other jobs and my research, and I have
gained exposure to a range of global development work. From editing reports on SHARE’s global
education research to creating a database of potential research partners at more than 100
universities worldwide, I have learned about the opportunities and challenges of the field.

At Pulte, I was a research assistant in the Algeria Research Hub Project. We worked with the
Algerian Ministry of Higher Education and the U.S. Department of State through the U.S. Embassy
in Algeria to increase their research capacity. This experience was fundamental in getting me
to where I am: working as a private equity analyst at Parthenon Capital. Pulte offered me the
opportunity to “be international”—to explore and understand countries beyond the U.S.
and my own, Brazil.
