26 Sustainability FLARE Network: Collaboration to Create a Sustainable Future for People and Forests The Forests and Livelihoods: Assessment, Research, and Engagement Network (FLARE) is an international community of researchers, practitioners, and policymakers committed to developing greater knowledge at the intersection of forests and livelihoods and applying it to policy and practice. Since 2023, the network has made its administrative home in the Pulte Institute. Daniel C. Miller, Keough School associate professor and Pulte Institute core affiliated faculty member, also serves as coordinator of FLARE. Now in its tenth year, FLARE, through its conferences and meetings with partner organizations, facilitates collaboration that drives research essential to human flourishing firmly grounded within the context of sustainability. In October 2023, members gathered in Nairobi, Kenya, for its annual meeting, the network’s first-ever in the Global South. “The FLARE conference allowed me to showcase my research about the impact of trees in farmlands and forests on the well-being of households in Ethiopia. As someone relatively new to research, this event helped me discover a new perspective: the need to embrace holistic and naturalistic approaches that can rejuvenate both our forests and livelihoods— two realms that should complement one another.” Lizzie Stifel Global Affairs, Political Science, ’24 24 | Sustainability The Pulte Institute for Global Development On this page: Professor Daniel C.
